Dr. Nazni Wasi Ahmad (PhD) is a Senior Research Officer at the Ministry of Health Malaysia. She began her career as a researcher at the Medical Entomology Unit, Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Kuala Lumpur, after completing her MSc and PhD at the University of Malaya. Her early work focused on fly control and later expanded to forensic entomology and biotherapy. She has pioneered the use of sterile maggots for treating diabetic wounds, coordinated clinical trials on medicinal leeches for diabetic wounds, joint pain, and venous congestion, and successfully sterilized tilapia skin as an alternative for skin grafting. Currently, Dr. Nazni is actively involved in dengue control research, focusing on innovative strategies such as Wolbachia and the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). The release of Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes, implemented in hotspot localities, has achieved up to a 90% reduction in dengue cases. She has authored and co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers, delivered more than 300 presentations locally and internationally, filed 11 patents, and commercialized 4 products. Widely recognized for her contributions through awards, media features, and chapters, Dr. Nazni continues to make impactful advances in public health research.
